I admit that I can get defensive over my singlehood. I don't know what it bothers others more than it does me but it does, trust me it does. Why am I bringing this up now? I heard that word on tv yesterday and it got me to thinking about all the words used in describing women. I am about to get on my soap box, so you may want to surf on over to another journal now.
That word is "spinster". Now let me ask you this. Men who don't get married are considered lucky to have "dodged the bullet," and they are refered to a bachelor. Women, on the other hand that aren't married have people wondering "what is wrong with her?"
The female of the species are always called something that sounds more degrading or something. An adult male dog is well an adult male dog, but the female is called a bitch. Homosexual men are called "gay." Homosexual women are called "lesiban." Now, please correct me if I am wrong, but does "gay" sound happy, and "lesiban" sound like a disease of some short? And what about that older man and woman that don't get married? He forever stays a bachelor, and at some point she becomes a spinster.
Ok, I can be making something out of nothing. And maybe I am just sensitive because I may end up being a spinster, but it bothers me. Ugly names for women and not for men are just wrong. Saying that a single man is OK, but if a woman stays single then something must be wrong with her -- or else why hasn't she married?

Well, I agree with your comments. I don't know why the terms seem that way. On the other hand, I have a friend that has hardly ever dated, is single at 45, and I don't know that anyone suggests he dodged anything. He is lonely. But not lonely enough to dial the phone or something. He is a very nice guy, who I think my ex would marry in a heartbeat since she met him. I also think good to be okay with your status. I worry that I am not, because its been so long. Gordy
