Do you realise that Christmas is almost here? I mean Thanksgiving is what about 2 weeks away? And that leaves a month to Christmas.
I HATE how commericalized Christmas (all holidays really) has become. It is NOT the reason the holiday was created, and even if you don't celebrate the religious reasoning then you still probably celebrate the secular (oh, big word for me. hope it's the right one and spelled right) side of it. And if you buy 1 or more presents, if you decorate in anyway, if you go to parties, then you are more than likely feeling the PAIN of a comercial Christmas.
So well I am NO expert. While I am very good at "do as I say and not as I do", I am going to TRY to help make the upcoming holiday a little less painful. TRY to. LOL
See the piggie bank up above? That's my own little piggie. I bought him at the Dollar store. He is plastic and (this is VERY important) DOES NOT have a hole for empting. Yes, if you want your money back out you have to CUT him open and render him unable to save your money anymore.
What you do is on payday BEFORE you put your paycheck into your wallet/purse, clean out ALL your change (coins -- all of them!) and any "paper" money. Yup, even if you have a $20 just sitting there take it out and fold it and stick it into the piggie. Between paydays if you have a lot of change go ahead and empty it into the piggie bank (you won't miss it and it lightens up the purse!)
You DON'T take any money out of the piggie bank. (That's why you want a plastic one with only a small "deposit" opening) When the bank is FULL (and only then) you cut the opening wider and empty the bank. Count, roll coins, go to bank. DEPOSIT money into savings account. On the way home stop by Dollar store and by a new piggie bank.
This is one way I use to save money for Christmas or for any other reason. Ifyou want to save for different things get a piggie for each "cause" and divide the money up as equal as possible into each one. DON'T TAKE MONEY OUT UNTIL THE BANK IS FULL.
And for goodness sake don't spend more that $1 or $2 on the bank.
Hang around for more money saving "advice" ( ) from the poor kid in NC.

Years ago, I had a big water jug with a narrow opening that I filled to the top with coins......my kids had to find it....That was the end of that. : )
Yes... the holidays sure are fast approaching.
I love the idea about the piggy bank. I am going to go buy one from the dollar store. GREAT IDEA!!

Im not into buying loads of presents, but it is also hard to compete with a sister who over does it and her kids let you know what they got.. you know the type of family menbers kids who make you feel like a bad mom for not overendulging at Christmas... We go to Christmas plays at Church and maybe a company dinner, we go around town and look at the great lights and decorations... We are starting traditions that build upon our family and memories. We go to church on Christmas and sing Carols. That is nice..real short like 30 minutes, then sip hot chocolate and talk to friends afterwards. I try to keep away from... all the shopping and charging on credit cards....but it is hard!!
