can you feel it? it's a rant......it's coming.......

They are things I try not to talk about in my journal.  Some things are just automatic hot buttons for some folk.  That's ok, I just try not to make waves......

But today I am going to rant.  So hard to believe because I just ranted a few entries ago, and 1 rant will ususally hold me for a period of time.

One of my favorite grocery stores closed and a new store that I have never heard of took it's place.  Dad and I decided to go today and check it out and see if it would be worth going back to buy groceries.  Sounded ok, how bad of a store could it be?

I noticed the difference as soon as I walked in the door.  Lots more fruits/vegitables that would be considered (in my little corner of the world) "mexican".  No big deal.  I might would try that weird looking piece of fruit........after I figured out what the heck it was.

No, that's not my rant.  The store did seem to lean more towards out hispanic community but I have no problems with that.  I won't buy something if I can't figure out what the heck it is but that's my problem.

The rant is about the employees.  I did buy a few things and go to the register to pay.  The ice cream wouldn't ring up so the cashier looks at another cashier (in that "what am I supposed to do now?" way.  I know that look, I understand that look) and all of the sudden everyone that works there (within hearing distance of said cashiers) are milling around talking spanish.  Someone goes to get a price check.  The cashier rings up the 1 apple I got and it comes up something like $1.62.  Way wrong price, I know this I stop her and say I am not paying that much for an apple.  3 or 4 people standing around with cashier ALL taking spanish trying to figure out what is wrong.

The person that appears to be "in charge" comes back with the price on the ice cream, voids out the apple and trys to figure out why it is charging wrong.  Finally figures out cashier is kind of leaning too close to the scale (and ringing up the code number wrong).  Finally all is rang up and my total told to me.

My total was told to me in English.  WHY DURING ALL THE PROBLEMS DID NOT ONE PERSON SAY SOMETHING TO ME  -- WE ARE SORRY  --- SOMETHING, ANYTHING, AND WHY COULD NOT A SINGLE PERSON TALK IN ENGLISH?  If I had walked into some of the little stores in parts of town that is evident they are run by hispanics and probably no English is spoken is one thing.  To walk into a store -- a huge store, one that is supposed to be a part of a chain of stores  -- wouldn't you expect to hear English?  When there is a problem with your order wouldn't you expect the cashier -- someone -- to say sorry, sorry you had to wait, say anything, and say IT IN FREAKING ENGLISH?

I am sorry folks.  But I don't care what country you come from.  If you are in the USA of your own free will, if you are going to work in public, then you should have to speak English.  I should not HAVE to learn another language to live in my own country.  It's bad enough that with every phone call or ATM visit I have to choose English or Spanish, but when you can't go into a large store (that is advertising to the whole community not just a small part of it) and hear/be spoken to in English something is wrong.

Go ahead and throw daggers if you want, don't leave comments with foul language or call me hateful names.

I DO NOT CARE WHAT COUNTRY YOU ARE FROM, WHAT LANGUAGE YOU SPEAK, WHAT COLOR YOUR SKIN IS.  I DON'T CARE.  REALLY I DON'T.  But if you expect to live in the USA then EXPECT TO SPEAK ENGLISH WHEN YOU ARE DEALING WITH THE PUBLIC.  I KNOW MORE OF YOU CAN SPEAK ENGLISH THAN ARE LETTING ON IN PUBLIC.  I KNOW THIS AND YOU KNOW THIS.  Don't come to this country for a better way of life and then try to change it to be something it isn't.  If you don't know English then learn it.  But I really expect cashiers to know English in order to have gotten the job.

End of rant.........

I agree wholeheartedly... if I went to another country where English wasn't the predominant language I would attempt & learn at least a few words/phrases etc. of the main language there.  If I couldn't I wouldn't go... it's a respect thing in my opinion, heck, my family had to learn english when they came here from Hungary... and they adhered to the "this is America, we speak english from now on" philosophy, they didn't even teach me Hungarian because it was not needed. Gee, I learned nearly two dozen phrases to go on a 9 day foreign vacaion, and "I'm so sorry" was one of them. I believe people have the right to talk to each other in their own language, but someone should have been polite enough to keep you apprised of what was going on. Margo

You have a right to your feelings. Do you live in a predominantly Spanish area?

Bravo!!  When I went to live in a foreign country, I learned the language OUT OF RESPECT for them. Accordingly, they should learn OUR language and customs as well.  That is not to say that I don't welcome them, this is the best country in the world.  The opportunity to emigrate from another country is a privilege, not a right.  OMG I'm ranting!!  Will people call me bad names?  Well, bless them!  I've heard it all before.  Blessings, Penny  http://journals.aol.com/firestormkids04/FromHeretoThere

You are right.  This Chain let you down AND their employees down.  They could at the very least teach them appropriate phases:  "Just one minute."  "I'm sorry for your wait."  "Thank you."  "Have a nice day."  -  Barbara

Lumpy and I argue about this all the time.  He is mexican and speaks english almost pretty well and I am hillbilly boy from the farm who ONLY speaks english.  He says that the country is changing and people need to adapt...I say that I am too old to adapt.  There must be some solution or compromise to this but I'll be damned if I know what it is.  Let the politicians fight it out.  SIGH

PS  Good rant.  I like it when you cut loose like that!

Wow Kathy....I had no idea there was such a large Spanish speaking population in N.C. I left Virginia 37 years ago...so I guess things have changed a lot!!  Living here in Texas... so close to the Mexican border... I encounter a lot of Mexican products in the stores, but I haven't run into what you ran into with the cashiers!  I, too, go crazy when I have to select English at the ATM machines and with the prompts on the phone calls...it down right infuriates me sometimes!

Hmm I'm torn on this one. First, I think just you should have been told Sorry in English. Somewhere in there yes that is the proper thing no matter what. Maybe they were waiting until the end but...

Now on the bigger issue. I'm thinking back to my ancestors days. Heck, even when I was a kid. My family came from an area in Chicago that was almost 100% Polish. Everyone knew each other & relatives lived within a few blocks etc. Get the picture. There were similar pockets of areas in Chicago for Hispanic, Italian, German ETC. Now it is still the case in some areas though it has changed. The Polish area is now predominantly Hispanic today. At that time it was very common to hear Polish being spoken & even today if you go there you will hear Spanish more. Now I know you mentioned if it is not predominantly that area but if that is who they are chosing to employ and they can not speak English very well & want the problem solved quickly...I guess also being an educator I know the only way to learn English is to slowly take on a job in an English speaking area, and for a time you will have to use Spanish & then learn new words slowly. Heck, now with generations gone, I wish I knew how to speak Polish...I'm kinda upset my ancestors let it go and didn't teach me.

I'm also thinking of all the other things over time that have changed...I mean the demands of women...if you want to be a women you better wear a dress & not pants...at that time just shocking but now look...if you want to be served you better go to the back of the bus or the back door....now look...things do change, we don't always like change, we think ours is the best way and it really does come from the idea that I don't know what they are saying so that isn't good.

The wonderful thing I like about America is its freedom of diversity & love for all. Heck...if they said sorry to me in Spanish I'd be happy with that. Sorry is Sorry and that is more the issue. And I'd le

Heck, I'd learn a new word! :-)

Just something to think about.

I just thought of something...how Sesame Street has had Spanish words for kids to learn for soooo long! Remember the "Aqua" :-)
