Ach---oooooo

no, not my babies.  not sure where i grabbed the photo from

Sitting here with Sophie curled up asleep on my desk.  Aren't animals so sweet when they are asleep?  Like litte angels?  Sophie is a little angel, she's sick (well sort of) but she's an angel.

Sophie took to sneezing a couple weeks ago.  Just when I thought I would take her to the vet she would stop.  Well over the weekend she about drove me nuts with all the sneezing so I took her to see Dr B this morning.  He says everything looks and sounds ok -- well 'cept for the sneezing.  She could be on the front end of a tiny infection, could be the start of an allergy........so Dr B gives us some pills.  Pills!!  Yikes!!!  I haven't had Sophie all that long (about a year?) so we haven't been down the pill giving path yet.

Dr B hands me the pill bottle and I just kind of stand there looking at it.  He finally goes, well let me go ahead and give her the first pill.  What happens then would probably win a prize on funniest animal videos.  Sophie wan'ts no part of that pill.  Dr B thinks he has the pill in her --- several times.  LOL  When he finally gets it in her poor Sophie is sliding/kicking her way off the side of the exam table and all Dr B can do is grab hold of her neck before she drops to the floor -- wait, she doesn't drop but he has her by the neck and then finally he has a hand under her bottom pushing her back onto the table.

What did we learn?  To get pill in Sophie you will practically have to ring her neck.  LOL  Sophie wasn't in harms way during all of this, really she wasn't.  She was freaking out because she didn't want a pill shoved down her throat, but he wasn't choking her (if he was I would have been choking HIM).

He gave me enough pills for 2 weeks but said to just give them for 3 or 4 days, if she is better I can stop the pills, if she is the same or worse bring her back.  So why did he give me so many pills?  Well, he didn't give them to me, it was about $10 for the pills and another $30 for her "exam".

Dad will be coming over for the next few days to try (TRY) to help me get Sophie's pills into her.  Cross your fingers, your toes, your eyes.........LOL  Dad is so scared he's going to get bit.  My little angel bite?  Not on purpose.  And besides I bet *"grandpa" wouldn't taste to good anyway.

*yes I refer to my parents as grandma and grandpa when talking to my babies (stop laughing I know you do the same thing and don't EVEN try to tell me you don't talk to your pets as if they were humans, because we all know you do!)  My folks are proud of their "grandcats" thank you very much! :)

Maybe you could crush the pill and put it in a bite of food.  We do that for people in the hospital when they can't take a pill.
Just a thought.

It' so hard giving meds to cats. Easier with dogs......in a way.
Your kitty sounds as if she has allergies. You should write down everything that you did this weekend and see if anything you used made her sneeze. Could even be a candle if you use them.

I hate medicating cats - their teeth are so sharp.  They flip themselves all over.  I wish you and your dad many blessings! Love, Penny  http://journals.aol.com/firestormkids04/FromHeretoThere

Could your baby have allergies?  Or maybe the air is dry and her mucous membranes are not working like they should.  Good luck with the pill-giving...I remember going throught that with Joan when she was a kitten.  We eventually forgave each other for that period of time!  :)

you could put the pill in something she likes to eat. I used to take my animals by surprise and it worked. I felt bad though.

I just had to laugh while reading your post.  Been there done it and will probably have to do it again.  Cats are amazing with pills.  Dogs are easy as pie.

I wrap my girls in a towel, pretty snug.  This keeps the feet in check.  Then I hold, really snug, like a baby.  Then I go for mouth.  It's tricky but after 20 attempts and several lacerations you can do it.  :-)

I tried the mixing in food.  Not gonna happen.  The pill will still be there.

One thing you might could do.  You'd have to ask the vet because sometimes you can't.  Crush the pill and mix it with food.  Most pills can be crushed but some can't because they have to be broken down further in the gut.

Good luck,

Deb

I can remember helping my sister give one of her cats pills.  It basically involved my holding the cat's hind ligs between my legs, holding it's paws with my left hand and holding its face with my right hand.  Then my sister would hold its mouth pried open with her left hand and stuff the pill down the cat's throat.  I hope your cat is feeling better soon, and that no one gets hurt!
