Does anyone know where I can find a list of what is OK to delete/make inactive some of the tasks that are running under the "processes" tab of the windows task manger?
I was told that you really don't want more than 40 or so running at one time, and guess what -- I have more running. I have no idea what these things are and if I need them or not. I don't want to delete/inactive the wrong things.
Is there a place at the Microsoft web site that will tell me? I have looked around and guess since I don't know what I am looking for I can't find anything.
Any help will be appreciated. For those that have tried to help me with my computer problems in the past thank you. I don't want to wear out my welcome so I decided to just place an "ad" for help here.
Thanks everyone.
Kathy

I WANT TO KNOW TOO!
Hi there. Thanks for visiting my journal and leaving comments. Did you ever get this task manager issue taken care of? I think that if you do the computer check with AOL it will check your computer and then tell you what to do from there. I know I was able to fix my computer. When I began the process and got to the point of where you could delete, the computer gave me a list of what was recommended to delete or vice versa. It broke it down for me. Good luck. I'm no computer guru, but managed to get this done. I think Windows gives you a message if you are about to delete something important.
I need to do a check up on mine again!!!!
Good luck! I'm no help at all!!! judi
Have you checked out microsoft.com?
Sometimes I go there and learn things.
You can'tfind a list Kathy because what is there is different for each person and depends on what programs you have on your PC and what loads at start up..... Im currently have 34 processes running. I could drop it a few places by disabling my photo and firewall software and virus software but really it ought not to be a problem...........a bigger issue is what loads with you computers -how many icons are displayed in bottom right hand corner and what ar they and do you need them?
Hi Kathy. I'm no computer whiz, far from it, but I did have a similar experience a while back with my computer running too slowly. I called the technical support number provided with my Compaq laptop and they walked me through some basic steps for clearing out unneccessary start-up programs from my computer. I have an older computer that uses Windows '98, but it uses a basic command that I figure must be standard to Microsoft and newer Window versions as well. From the "Start" menu pick the "Run" button and type in "msconfig" in the space provided and click "ok". This takes you to a sytem configuration utility with several buttons. From there you choose the "Startup" button. It shows you a list of all your programs with the ones that actually open up at start-up checked off in boxes. They actually told me to have no more than 9 programs running at start-up, and that the only absolutely necessary ones said things like "scan registry", "system tray" and "load power profile"and of course, anti-virus software. Anything else I had checked was simply for the convenience of having access to them from the lower right window of my computer. At any rate from this utility, not only does it show you the file locations, but gives you their titles or descriptions so you can actually know what they are and whether you need or don't need them for start-up. Unchecking them doesn't delete any files, just merely takes them off your little window at the bottom where access to them is not so convenient, but speeds up your computer a little. I hope this could be of some help to you. Kimberly
Hmm, I was having the same problem and am so glad I read your comment-answers here! ¤holly
