Monday started off great. Woke up with a sore throat. Guess that is why I felt so tired all weekend. I hope that it doesn't turn into a full fledged bad cold.
I went yesterday and bought an aquarium. (I have wanted some fish for the longest time.) I didn't get everything set up until today. Now I have to wait before I get fish. At PetSmart I was told to wait 24 hours. The instructions with the tank said 7 days. Who is right?
The instructions also said to add only 1 or 2 fish at a time. Anyone out there with an aquarium? How long should I wait to add fish? It is a 10 gallon tank so I think the most I can have is about 6 fish, I think. Anyone know?
OH, there is another great journal out there. Community Story Book is a journal that is a story in the making. Fifteen AOL journlist take turns writing part of the story. #1 writes an enty, then #2 picks up the story, and so on. Just when I (and maybe some of the writers) think the story is going in one direction the next entry takes it a different way. There has only been 5 entires so far so now is the time to go and catch it from the beginning.

Wait the week. That gives the water a chance to stablize and the aquarium a chance to get rid of all toxins. As far as fish, different fish stay at different levels. There are top bottom and middle fish. You can have a lot more than 5 fish in the tank just make sure they are different level fish. Also make sure that most of the fish are about the same size or the big fish will eat the little fish. Guppies are easy and colorful and easy to start with.

I have a 10 gal and a 25 gal tank. I always add my fish after 24 hours but is best to wait a week. That gives the tank time to stabalize and it also raises the chances of survival for the fish. Whenever buying fish, let them know what you already have in the tank and make sure you ask if the fish you are purchasing are aggressive. I learned the hard way on that one. To keep from having an over-crowded tank, add an inch of fish per gal of water. Also, pay close attention to the fish before you purchase them. Look for sores, discolorasion's and such. Don't buy those, they are sick and will make your other fish sick too. Also, check the water's Ph balance often. You can buy stuff to help keep the Ph at the right level. Good Luck!

PS, CONGRATS ON BEING FEATURED! :O)
I've never had more than one goldfish, and never had a goldfish that lasted past 2 weeks, so I probably shouldn't give advice on the fish thing. My guess is that you should probably wait the 7 days, just to be absolutely safe. :)
Good luck! I hope your fish bring you a great deal of happiness. Be sure to get the lights and the little stones and pretty toys for them. Spoil 'em! :D
Thank you for sharing the link to the Community Storybook. What Fun Summer Reading!
Hi i'm new to the online journal or bloggin shall i say i would really like for others questions and comments please check out my journal the title is thru me and the screenname is suave9531 thank you sincerely ------ suave
Waiting 24 hours is for the chlorine to disapate in the water. Ten days would be so everything in your tank setls but waiting that long won,t help start you biological filter witch grows in the gravel. To get that started you need a fish waist product in the water(peepee).Lol! Anyway after the first day or so you can put one fish in to get the system started. Do not expext this fish to live for a long time because he is going to start the biolosical filter to spike. It must spike to get the filter to start growing. This means there will be a high amonia count in the water and the fish will have a hard time. It might make it if you pick a harty fish. Talk with the pet store thay should have some good info really. There is a product out there to get all that done by just adding a bio start. Ask maybe thay will know. Good luck!

I ve been following that story Its on 7 now and really good so far. I Dont know about aquariums but we add this stuff to water that lets us add fish with in mintues to our fish pond. Go to a place that speicalizes in fish only. See what they say. I hope you dont get sick. Summer colds are bummers. Lori
IT IS BETTER TO WAIT AT LEAST 5 DAYS BUT IF YOU BUY A PRODUCT CALLED START RIGHT YOU CAN ADD THE FISH WITHIN MINUTES AFTER ADDING THAT PRODUCT. YOU SHOULD ONLY START OUT WITH 2 FISH AND A WEEK LATER IF ALL GOES WELL ADD 2 MORE AND SO ON. GOOD LUCK WITH THE TANK. I HAVE HAD TANKS ALL MY LIFE AND ALSO A POND.
I love aquariums-I have a 30 gallon and a 55 gallon. I add start right, then can adsd the fish right away-I usually add 1-2 then more as time goes on! Good luck!
I am now wanting to do a slatwater aquarium-those fish are beautiful! Love the little shrimp.

Here's the advice I give in our shop ( I work in a pet shop). Start off the tank and add the dechlorinator. At least 1 day later, add some friendly bacteria - there are many brands, your aquarist or pet shop can advise. Thereafter, try adding 1 flake of fish food every other day. This will start the bioculture building in your filter/gravel. After a week to 10 days, add 1 or 2 fish but ONLY AFTER checking your water quality. You can buy kits from the pet shop but a good aquarist will test a small sample of your water if you supply it before he sells you any fish. Thereafter, make frequent water quality checks using the kit, especially before you decide to add new fish. There are also anti-stress products on the market you can add to the water to help new fish adjust, and don't forget to top up the good bacteria regularly. The key to a healthy tank is good water quality. If your nitrates or amonia levels are too high, the fish will die so it really does pay to check the quality and to make partial water changes whenever the level gets too high - about 30% or even 50% if the levels are really high.
Hope this helps!

Being in the TOP 5 was way cool! I really enjoy your journal... I don't comment much in the journals I read because there are sooooooo many of them that I visit... if I took time to comment in every one I'd soon grow skin around this chair I sit in and never move again... BUT I do visit this one and several, several, several others .... I like what you do here. Keep it up.
I especially like the mammogram button in your about me section.
Well, keep up the good work.
