I have been learning more about our friends "across the pond." And this entry is about something that I have just learned.
Stuart over at Specimen Days wrote recently about having black pudding for breakfast. I am reading that and thinking "what the heck is that?". And he was more than happy to tell me. And send a few pictures. This is what black pudding looks like:
Want to know what it is? This is what he wrote in a email to me: **don't read while eating**
Black Pudding, one of the great creations of civilised society, is essentially congealed pig's blood in a length of intestine. There are many variations; in England, the pudding is usually bound with rusk and has bits of fat in it. The French have their boudin noir with nowt but blood in the casing, the Germans blotwürst, the Spanish morcilla which is often bound with rice. Can there be a finer sight in a shop window than a freshly cooked black pudding, still steaming slightly, looking like... er... a slimy coil of warm intestine filled with congealed blood?
Sounds yummy. NOT. This is what he calls biscuits:
This is what we call biscuits:
which looks like what he calls scones (which he says are sweet):
This is what Stuart thinks is a great breakfast:
This is what most of us would call a good breakfast:
Or maybe some pancakes:
So there you have it folks. What one Scotsman calls breakfast and what this American calls breakfast. Which would you rather have?

Gosh, I was snacking on Chinese food when I came here and suddenly I'm not hungry anymore after reading the black pudding thing! LOL!!!
Oh! You know, (lol), I knew that this "black pudding" had to have some kind of catch.....I couldn't help but think, "What a sly trick to play on your tots! Tell them if they are good there'll be some black pudding in it for them, and then serve them up a savory helping of congealed pigs blood...lol! Now that's crafty! Actually. I would like to think that I am open-minded enough to try things that scare me, such as this "black pudding".......but I dunno........lol! (Fun entry)!
I am so glad that i never have to see black pudding again. I wanted to throw-up!! And i thought Liver Mush was horrible!!! ~Hollt
Black pudding does sound gross and I wouldn't eat it but it's no worse than people here in the US eating chitlins! For those that don't know, that's pig intestines boiled and then fried. The stinch of them cooking will kill a pregnant woman in under a minute. LOL

YUM!!!!!!!!! Lori
This goes in the category with head cheese.. gag~!!!!
Give me a cup of coffee, a duck egg and an English muffing any day!
I spent about 5 years total as a child in Scotland. I was just a toddler the first time, but I was 8 the second time. We lived 3 doors up from a bakery and got fresh rolls all day long! I remember eatting a lot of sheep there, and always wanted to try black pudding, but my father wouldn't let my mom buy any from the butcher. I loved porridge and toast with marmalade for breakfast with tea, my favorite lunch was a simple cheese and butter sandwich served on a huge crusty roll, and ginger beer, which was like ginger ale. Thanks for stirring up the dust in my memories, that was fun!
Wonder who thought to even TRY congealed pigs blood...? I'll have the pancakes please! --Albert
